Spanish Language and Culture at Universidad de Granada
Lenght: 4-Week(s)
Credit Level: Any
Number of credits: 3
Language level: Any
Keywords: University of Central Florida, Universidad de Granada, Study in Spain
Program description and subjects: The Centre for Modern Languages of the University of Granada (founded in 1531) provides an opportunity for immersion in an intensive academic environment where participants can be part of the Spanish language and culture; students arrive in Granada July 1st and depart July 31st. In the traditional classroom room setting in the United States, students have between 3-4 contact hours a week with the language and then often have limited contact outside of the classroom setting. In the study abroad setting, not only are students immersed in the language in the classroom setting during 20 hours a week, but additionally they will spend the rest of the time outside of the classroom in real, authentic language interactions. Academically, students in this program will be able to earn 6-9 credits in Spanish during their time abroad by taking the classes listed below (It is strongly recommended that students take only 6 credits so as to allow time for exploration and contact with the Spanish people). The students also will gain exposure to a diversity of social values and intellectual atmospheres that will foster the development of new language and social skills as well as experience of cultural immersion through numerous excursions to different parts of Spain. Excursions We will travel to Sevilla, Córdoba, and Nerja as part of the program as well as visit the many historical sites in Granada including a visit to the Alhambra (the famous Moorish fort and palace). We will additionally experience first hand and recognize the differences within the Spanish culture, social values, religious views, and politics. The Centre The Language Centre (Centro de Lenguas Modernas (CLM)) is located in the central district of the "Realejo" and is housed in the old palace of Santa Cruz (16th century) which has been specially restored for teaching purposes. Since restoration was completed in 1992, the new CLM offers not only its now renowned Spanish Courses for Foreigners (Hispanic Studies Course, Studies in Spanish Language and Culture Course and Intensive Spanish Language Courses) but also a variety of Foreign Language Courses (English, French, Italian, German, Arabic, Modern Greek, Japanese, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian and Swedish). It is the combination of the two that make the centre such an original venture; here foreign students can share their daily lives with those of Spanish students, thus stimulating a mutual interest in their different languages and cultures. This contact is strengthened through a language exchange service, which gives students the opportunity to practice their Spanish outside the classroom, and by cultural visits and activities. Finally, the University of Granada is situated in the city centre and only a few minutes walk from the Town Hall and the Nasrid palace "the Alhambra". Granada is in southern Spain in the region known as Andalusia, and provides a unique and safe learning environment for students. The city dates back to the 6th century B.C. and was the last Moorish kingdom conquered in 1492. It is a picturesque city at the foot of the Sierra Nevada’s where you can walk in a mountain forest or lie on the Mediterranean beach, all less than an hour away from Granada. Let yourself be inspired; join the Spanish Language and Culture Program in Summer 2010. Courses offered: SPN 1120 Elementary Spanish I (4 credits) SPN 1121 Elementary Spanish II (4 credits) SPN 2200 Intermediate Spanish I SPN 2201 Intermediate Spanish II SPN 3402 Practice in Modern Spanish Grammar SPN 3760 Advanced Spanish Oral Communcation SPN 3850 Structure of the Spanish Language SPN 3512 Contemporary Spanish Culture Abroad SPN 4410 Advanced Spanish Conversation SPN 4510 Spanish Civilization and Culture SPW 3100 Survey of Spanish Lit I SPW 3130 Survey of Latin American Lit I All classes are 3 credit hrs/each.

Program description and subjects: PROGRAM DATES Academic Year: early September - late June Spring Term: early February - late June NOTE: Students may participate in this program for the spring or for a full academic year. YEAR PROGRAM STARTED: 1998 Top HOST INSTITUTION In 1968-69, the Higher Technical Schools of Agricultural Engineering, Architecture, Civil Engineering and Industrial Engineering were integrated to form the Higher Polytechnic Institute of Valencia. University status was granted in 1971 and the name was changed to Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV). Since then, new degrees have been added and existing programs expanded to form a University that now specializes mainly in technology. Exchange students are admitted to an academic department and should take most of their courses in that department. As you might expect, academic departments are not arranged at UPV the same way as they are at Georgia Tech. For example, courses in Management and Mechanical Engineering are offered through UPV's Higher Technical School of Industrial Engineering. Top ACADEMIC INFORMATION Subject Areas Available: Architecture Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Civil Engineering Computer Science Computer Engineering Electrical Engineering Environmental Engineering Industrial Design Industrial and Systems Engineering Management Mechanical Engineering Modern Languages Spanish Language Information You MUST speak Spanish to attend UPV as a participant in the semester exchange program. UPV does offer some courses in English. However, you will not be able to take a full course load in English. GT recommends that students complete at least 2 years of college level Spanish or have the equivalent advanced/3000 level of skills before participating in this program. If you need to freshen up on your Spanish skills before the semester starts, UPV's satellite campus at Gandia offers a two-week intensive language program for exchange students before the start of both the spring and fall terms. Even if you think your Spanish is at a high enough level to jump right into regular UPV classes, we recommend that you take advantage of this course to get used to speaking the language on a daily basis. For more information click here. UPV also offers free Spanish classes for exchange students during both semesters so that students can brush up on their Spanish while taking regular UPV classes. These general courses are offered on the following schedule: November- January - 2 days/week, 2 hours each class March - May - 2 days/week, 2 hours each class Note: Although Valenciano, one of the official languages of Spain, is the language spoken by locals and by students at UPV who are from the region, most courses at UPV are taught in Spanish.

BARCELONA SUMMER PROGRAM

Number of credits: Any
Language level: Beginner
Keywords: Computing, Georgia Tech, Faculty-led, Summer
Program description and subjects: The program will take place in Barcelona, Spain, as part of an exchange program with the Facultat d'Informatica de Barcelona (FIB) at Universidad Politecnica de Catalonia (UPC). Closely resembling Georgia Tech in organization and mission, UPC is a public, technological university with strong, internationally recognized academic and research programs in science and engineering. UPC's campus is within Barcelona, a few minutes away from the heart of the city and its Mediterranean beaches. The program is open to any student, regardless of major, academic unit, or even home institution: the program thus welcomes participants from any undergraduate program throughout the country. As in the past, the 2010 Summer Program will offer a set of courses with an interdisciplinary focus that underscores the trans-cultural experience. At present, several courses of wide-ranging interest are envisioned, ranging from architecture to computing and Spanish-language instruction. Importantly, neither programming experience nor special prerequisites are required for most of the courses. All courses provide academic credit toward graduation. Other program features include in-state tuition rates for non-residents, and a schedule designed to optimize learning, travel, and cultural immersion. All types of financial aid and scholarships that would be available on campus would also be applicable to this program. And non-residents will pay only a $250 state fee but will only pay in-state tuition! The program is tentatively scheduled to take place from 17 May to 26 July (approximately 10 weeks). The travel dates for group travel is located in the "Costs" section. Registration for group travel is optional upon acceptance. The interdisciplinary focus, coupled with the Mediterranean location, make this a rather remarkable opportunity. We invite you to visit these pages to obtain additional information - and hope you will join us for a wonderful summer in Barcelona!
