Schoolchildren Have Spanish-Immersion Field Trip

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- More than two dozen students at Smithland Elementary put their Spanish-speaking skills to the test on Tuesday.Third-graders at Smithland Elementary have spent Tuesday morning at Harrisonburg High School on scavenger hunts, and solving math and word problems all in Spanish. They've even had some time to do a little Spanish-style dancing.There are 44 third grade students in the Spanish language immersion program at Smithland Elementary.

Half of them are native Spanish speakers; the other half are native English speakers. But all of them can speak both languages.Teachers said most field trips are in English, but students Tuesday had an all-Spanish experience. Students said it's important since Harrisonburg has such a large Spanish-speaking presence.
