Dual language immersion headed to middle school

After five years of dual language immersion in Cache County School District, the first cohort of young bilingual students will take the leap to middle school in the fall.

The program began in 2013 with first-grade Spanish classes at Heritage Elementary, Chinese at Providence Elementary, French at River Heights Elementary and Portuguese at Sunrise Elementary, which also implemented a second grade level that inaugural year. North Cache Middle School will soon be taking on those Portuguese students.

Shauna Winegar, dual language immersion coordinator for CCSD, said spending half of the day learning in a foreign language instills a sense of confidence and cultural competency in the students.
